Sonic Savor: “Your album WTSGD was released in March this year. How did you feel the day the album was released? Were you excited, relieved, scared?”
Sawyer Utah: “I was super excited the day it came out, as so much work goes into creating vision, the music, the visuals, and everything in between. Once it comes out, I’m usually just so pumped for everyone to have it forever!”
Sonic Savor: “Your creativity is all over this album. It’s incredible. Looking at the credits, I saw that this album was created almost entirely by you. What’s the best thing about having so much creative control of your projects?”
Sawyer Utah: “First, thank you! I really am so grateful for the friends I make music with and have some of the most fun creating with others. But I really also do enjoy creating on my own - and even more mixing and mastering my own music. Being able to finish the songs on my own without anyone else is something that keeps my vision very true and honest to what I hear in my head. But the great writers and producers I do work with I really am so grateful for because they just get me!”
Sonic Savor: “Do you have a favorite collaborative moment from the past year?”
Sawyer Utah: “One moment that stands out is the morning that John Waugh (of The 1975) sent me the saxophone tracks for LADY & CARS. I remember waking up early in NYC and seeing his messages that he had sent and I was so excited to mix them in the songs. He absolutely crushed it!”
Sonic Savor: “What is your biggest creative challenge, and how do you overcome it?”
Sawyer Utah: “I’d say one of the moments I always get a little in my head is when I start a new song. I will go from finishing a 100-track song in Logic to all of a sudden looking at a blank slate with no tracks or music in front of me, having to create from nothing. But I overcome this by just looking at what I’ve made before, and believing that I’ll do it again!”
Sonic Savor: “How has being from the midwest shaped your perspective of the world, as well as who you are as an artist?”
Sawyer Utah: “I think it definitely has impacted my sonic taste and obviously my stories I tell, too. I grew up in a small, creative town where I was playing open mics throughout my childhood, performing at coffee shops and talent shows. I think my experience in such a small town made me excited and eager to go out and see the world more. Then when I had my first experiences in cities like LA and New York, it majorly shaped my story.”
Sonic Savor: “This is such an exciting time for you in your musical journey. What can we expect to see you doing in the next year or two?”
Sawyer Utah: “I was just talking to my Mom the other day about this - and I said something to her like ‘I just feel like there is so much music left in me’. And that is truly how I feel in this moment. You never know when you’ll write your final song, so I truly want to put everything I can into the music I make, the shows I play, and everything else. Whether it be my future projects or projects for other artists, I am as inspired as ever. I’m so thankful for you all to be on this journey with me!”
